When I first got the itch to make radio, I had no idea where to start. I, like many producers before me, went to This American Life’s website and discovered a tab called “Make Radio.” There, you can buy a comic book written collaboratively by Ira Glass and a cartoonist named Jessica Abel. This book is a vivid portrayal of TAL's production process from start to finish, and quickly became the catalyst that led to a wonderful chain of events in my life of making radio. So, it was an unexpected, full circle moment when Jessica Abel, the woman behind the fabled comic book that started so many radio careers, asked if I wanted to be interviewed for her podcast about my experience founding the podcast collective The Heard.

Jessica recently released a new graphic novel called “Out on the Wire: The Storytelling Secrets of the New Masters of Radio.” She takes content from the first comic book and expands on it by talking to people from amazing shows like Snap Judgement and Radiolab. Out of that she launched her podcast also called Out on the Wire about making stories step by step -and that's how our stories intertwined.

I’m privileged to be a part of The Heard. It's an amazing community that has allowed me to thrive, learn and reach others. If you want to know more about The Heard (how it works and why it was started) you can listen to Jessica’s episode or visit The Heard's website. Please listen and tell me what you think.
